Jodhpur – A tourist destination of India

Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination of India. It is situated in the Indian state of Rajasthan and is popularly known as Blue city and sun city. It is also known as the cultural capital of Rajasthan. It is famous for many palaces, forts and temples. Jodhpur is located  in such a geographic location of Rajasthan, which makes it a convenient base for tourism.

It is a centre of different educational institutions like AIIMS Jodhpur, IIT Jodhpur, NIFT Jodhpur &  research institutions like Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO),Arid Forest Research Institute (AFRI),Desert Medicine Research Institute (DMRC) are also located here.

The climate of Jodhpur is hot during its dry season. Temperature remains high from March to October. It crosses 40 degree celcius from April to June. During Mansoon season it decreases slightly.

Places to visit in Jodhpur

Jodhpur is a famous tourist destination in India. Some of its notable attractions are Mehrangarh fort, Umaid Bhawan Palace, Ghanta ghar or Clock Tower, Jaswant Thada, etc. Mehrangarh fort is included in world heritage site list under Hill forts of Rajasthan.

 There are also various tourist attractions like Mandaleshwar Mahadev temple, Ratanada Ganesh temple, ISKON temple, Sardar samand lake and palace, Masooriya hills, Veer Durgadas smarak and Bhim bhadak cave, etc. are here.

Some of its other attractions are its traditional shoes which is also known as Jodhpuri Mojari, traditional clothes, cuisines and antique items.

Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh fort  is also known as Mehran fort and is considered as one of the largest forts of the country. It was built by Rao Jodha in 1459. It is situated at a hill and is surrounded by massive walls. The fort has palaces like Sheesh Mahal (Glass Palace ) and Phool Mahal (Rose Palace).The palaces, museums and the galleries  attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world. Nagnecha mataji temple, Chamunda temple, Rao Jodha desert , Rock park are the other tourist attractions in Mehrangarh fort.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Umaid Bhawan Palace is a beautiful tourist attraction for the visitors. At present the 347 room palace is divided into three parts. One part is the residence of the royal family where no tourists are allowed to enter, the second part is converted into museum which is the collection of arms, photographs and many other possessions of the royal family and the third part is converted into a five star hotel , which is one of the most popular hotels in Jodhpur. There is a beautiful lush green garden full of variety of flowers in front of this palace, which makes it a unique site seeing place. It is also known as the Chittar palace.

Ghanta Ghar or Clock Tower

Ghanta Ghar is also known as clock tower. It was built 200 years ago by Maharaja Sardar singh and is situated in the centre of Jodhpur city. It is a unique place for the travellers to see along with the markets surrounding it. Many types of people can be seen here. During nights the Ghanta ghar is lit up which gives a splendid look.

Jaswant Thada

Jaswant Thada is lying in Jodhpur. It is a marble monument and is a mausoleum for the kings of Marwar. It was built in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar singh in memory and honour of his father Maharaja Jaswant singh II  and is still used by Marwar royal family as cremation ground. There is a beautiful garden located in front of this monument which attracts a large number of tourists. It is also called the Taj Mahal of Marwar and attracts a large number of tourists.

Mandore Garden

Mandore garden is located 9 km. away from Jodhpur. It is situated in Mandore. It is a part of more massive Mehrangarh fort. Once it was the ruling seat of Pratihara dynasty. The garden also has a government museum.

Jodhpur is one amongst the famous tourist destinations in India. It is well connected by Air, Rail, Road with many parts of the country.

Air

Jodhpur airport is regarded as one amongst the most important airports of Rajasthan due to its strategic location. There are daily flights available from Delhi, Mumbai to the city as well as to Ahmedabad and Bengaluru.

Rail

Jodhpur railway station is well connected with major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Bhopal, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Patna and many other cities of the country.

Some of the luxury trains like Palace on Wheels, Royal Rajasthan on Wheels and Maharaja Express  runs in Rajasthan from which royal opulence and magnificence of Rajasthan can be experienced. Jodhpur is the divisional headquarters of the north western railways.

Road

Jodhpur is well connected by road to all major cities in Rajasthan and neighbouring states. There are buses like Deluxe and express buses are available within the state, whereas  buses like Volvo and Mercedes Benz are  available which goes to Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Udaipur and a few other cities. Jodhpur is well connected to the national highway networks and Rajasthan state highway network.

Famous foods of Jodhpur

Jodhpur is the origin place of many delicious Indian cuisines. Makhaniya lassi, Pyaaj ki kachori, Mawa ki Kachori, Dal Bati Churma, Lasan Ki Chutney, Gatte Ki sabzi, Aate Ka halwa, etc. are some of the famous cuisines of Jodhpur city.
